Our fourth annual Summer Fairs brought GEF lodge residents, families, staff, volunteers, and neighbours together to celebrate the joys of summer. Designed to spark feelings of nostalgia, the fairs recreated many of the sights, sounds, tastes, and traditions that make summer memories so special, from colourful decorations and classic fair games to familiar music and seasonal treats.
Held across 10 GEF lodges, the Summer Fairs provided spaces where everyone was welcome to gather, connect, and celebrate the season. Approximately 1,600 people attended throughout the summer, while 83 volunteers contributed 356 hours to help bring the events to life.
The Block Party Experience
At GEF Queen Alexandra Place Lodge, Meadowlark Place Lodge, and Virginia Park Lodge, the fairs expanded into community block parties, inviting neighbours, local families, and community partners such as the Edmonton Police Service, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services, and Edmonton Neighbourhood Watch to join in the festivities.
By welcoming the broader community, these events aimed to strengthen residents’ connection to the neighbourhoods they call home. The block parties also gave GEF an opportunity to connect with neighbours, build relationships, and showcase the vibrant communities within our lodges. Many neighbours shared that they had often seen our lodges in their neighbourhoods but were not familiar with who we are or the services we provide. The events helped increase awareness of GEF while creating meaningful opportunities for residents, staff, and community members to connect. With such a positive response from residents, families, and neighbours, GEF hopes to bring the block party experience to even more resident fairs next year.
Something for Everyone
Each Summer Fair had something for everyone, from petting zoo visits and trishaw rides to airbrush tattoos and custom balloon creations.
There were also plenty of opportunities for fun and friendly competition, with games including the Human Slot Machine, Duck Pond, Ring Bottle Toss, Balloon Pop, Plinko, and Coin Flip. Inspired by the classic fair experience, these activities encouraged residents and guests to embrace their sense of play, test their skills, and share a few laughs along the way. Whether celebrating a win or trying again for a better score, participants enjoyed the light-hearted energy that filled the space before heading to the prize booth and spin wheel for a special treat.
A Taste of Summer
Food is always a big highlight at GEF events! Each Summer Fair served up some classic summer treats. Guests enjoyed corn dogs, popcorn, sno-cones, root beer floats, and more.
Giving Back Through the 50/50 Raffle
This year’s Summer Fairs also featured the launch of our first GEF-wide 50/50 Summer Raffle. Thanks to everyone’s incredible support, the raffle jackpot reached $17,110 between June and August. Half of the jackpot was awarded to the winning ticket holder, while the other half went toward the Quality of Life Fund, supporting programs, activities, outings, and service enhancements that enrich the lives of GEF seniors year-round.
Bringing People Together
While the games, food, and entertainment were a big part of the fun, the goal of the Summer Fairs was bringing people together. Whether meeting new neighbours, or sharing an evening with family and friends, the events created opportunities for meaningful connection and a sense of belonging.
