65th Anniversary

For 65 years, the name of GEF Seniors Housing has been synonymous with vibrant, affordable communities for seniors in Edmonton. In 2024, Alberta’s largest non-profit social housing operator for seniors becomes a senior itself! As we enter our Golden Years, we join with our community in:

  • CELEBRATING the wisdom, experience, and accomplishments that come with age.
  • REFLECTING on our journey, achievements, and contributions to society.
  • EMBRACING new opportunities, ENJOYING newfound freedoms, and ENGAGING in activities that bring fulfillment and joy.

Our celebrations kick off during Seniors Week (June 3 to 9).

GEF History

The Beginning

The Greater Edmonton Foundation (GEF) came into existence in 1959 following the approval of Alberta’s Homes for the Aged Act.

The Four Original Projects

The original Master Agreement allowed for four sites –Belvedere, Elmwood, McQueen and Rosslyn and “further sites” which were not specified or enumerated, except as to the number of residents in all, which was set at 400.

Affordable Seniors Housing

Rosslyn Terrace‘s opening in 2012 marked the beginning of a new approach to affordable seniors housing not for GEF SeniorsHousing, but for all of Edmonton.

Affordable Apartment

Ottewell Terrace, which opened in 2015, is one of five Affordable Apartment buildings owned by GEF.

Age in Place

GEF’s Sakaw Terrace opened in 2019 and fulfills a growing need for affordable seniors housing, allowing seniors to age in place in their own communities.

GEF Seniors Housing is the largest non-profit social housing operator for seniors in Alberta and a registered charity with 41 buildings, 400 employees and nearly 4,000 tenants and residents.
